Last night I watched the movie Spring Breakers together with my wife. Have heard a lot about this movie and now when it finally was out on DVD we decided to watch it. Some people who have seen Spring Breakers claim they only seen a shallow forest of bare breasts and butts, anything pink, bubblegum magnificent or a meaningless, empty and / or nihilistic provocation. Some have even said that it reinforces a rape culture.

Brit, Candy, Cotty and Faith are heading off to Florida and party on spring break, but can not afford it. To finance the trip they rob a local restaurant. Once in Florida the four meet the gangster and drugdealer Alien and it will eventually lead into many strange situations.
Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Benson plays the lead roles, and of course there is a point that they are the very ones: Actresses who are seen as cute and harmless. “Spring breakers’ is a film about to break out, get out of the roles they are assigned or painted himself himself in. A movie about when Hudgens, Gomez and Benson decided to join a Korine film, when Britney Spears shaved her head and fought with an umbrella. Spears runs like a thread through the film, and this could be the film adaptation of many of her lyrics. Like, for example, “Brave New Girl” ”She’s gonna step outside / Uncover her eyes / Who knew she could feel so alive / Her MO’s changed / She do not wanna behave / Is not it good to be a brave girl tonight”
And the film does not get more beautiful than when Alien (James Franco) sings and plays Britney Spears’ “Everytime” on a white grand piano, surrounded by Hudgens and Benson, equipped with pink balaclavas and big guns.
But do not misunderstand. “Spring breakers” are not overwhelming perfection of one simple reason that violent-women-feminism. It is because there is not an imitation moment. For the girls’ friendship is portrayed. To Alien falls so hard for them when they literally and figuratively takes control, and to Korine never look at their bodies from without but have positioned themselves inside their heads and consistently is on their side. Because it’s warped and beautiful at the same time.
Already from the beginning I could tell I would not like the movie, I did not like how the roles were played out or the general story of the movie. It might be because I am starting to get too old for this kind of movies, but I can not give Spring Breakers more than 3/10 on IMDB. Not even Vanessa Hudgens could save such a crappy movie.
