A riot in Xinjiang in western China has claimed 35 lives, state media in China.

According to the news agency in China had 17 people been killed when police opened fire and shot dead another 10 people. Xinjiang is an autonomous region of great ethnic Uyghur population and ethnic differences often lead to unrest. In April, 21 people died in clashes between residents and police and other government officials.

According to the state media knife armed men attacked a police station and a government building that is 10 miles from the desert town of Turpan and 28 mil from Xinjiang’s capital of Urumqi.

A number of people were injured and taken to hospital. Violence eruption is the bloodiest in Xinjiang since 2009, when nearly 200 were killed in clashes between Uighurs and Han Chinese.

Police have clashed with Muslim Uighurs in particular in the city of Shanshan where Uighurs are the majority. This week’s unrest is the worst in years.

The Uighurs spokesman in Sweden claims it is the Chinese authorities’ repression behind the violence. Chinese officials, however, claims that it is the issue of terrorism that led from abroad. China’s Uighurs are a Turkish minority of around 10 million people who live mainly in Xinjiang province.
